A whole new way to mediate

NVC Mediation is worlds away from traditional mediation. The goal is not to merely reach agreement, but to truly meet people’s needs—including yours as the mediator. You’re not just a referee, you’re a person, and you can’t help but bring your own needs to the table. When you address that reality, both you and your clients are better for it.

Whether you are considering a career in professional mediation or want your existing practice to be more personally and financially satisfying, Ike and John can help you acquire the skills and the confidence to make the leap.

Learn about our approach.

  • Just like real life. Central to our approach are extensive role-play exercises that mimic real situations. You’ll rapidly acquire a new set of mediation skills.
  • Self-care. We cover various ways to work with your own judgments and reactions concerning a mediation—before, during, and after.
  • Premediation. You’ll learn how to use what we call the enemy image process to prepare individual clients for their mediation session. It paves the way for a smooth, successful mediation.
  • Postmediation. You’ll also learn how to help clients move into the learning cycle after a mediation and prepare for the next step.
  • Peer learning. Because our trainings integrate new and experienced students, you can both get coaching from accomplished mediators and offer it. And if you see someone in the room doing something you like, you can try it too. It’s a very stimulating learning environment.
  • Support for your career. When you train with us, you join a community with which to share your concerns and continue to practice and learn long after the program ends.

Let our students tell you about it:

“If only I had learned these skills 15 years ago!”

“The mediation series provided me with practical yet powerful skills for resolving conflict—in my own life and the lives of others. I’ve been a peacemaker at heart all of my life. However, prior to this training, I didn’t have the tools to translate my intention into action. Since the workshop I have gone on to do several successful mediations with clients in my private practice as well as friends and family. If only I had learned these skills 15 years ago! John and Ike’s mastery of the material, depth of experience, and integrity in living the process are exceptional. I highly recommend this training!”

“I am now very enthusiastic about using NVC in real mediation situations”

“I have thoroughly enjoyed John and Ike’s NVC mediation series—so much so in fact that I am about to start my third series. Taking the mediator role has put me in situations where I really need to get in touch quickly with my own feelings and needs and those of the characters in the role-plays. This is challenging, but the challenge has encouraged me to spend more time between classes practicing and studying NVC. I am now very enthusiastic about using NVC in real mediation situations in my own career.”
—Newt Bailey, 2009, 2010 graduate

“I am able to help others experience the life within them”

“After several trainings with John and Ike, I am expecting 2011 to be very prosperous not just financially, but with connecting to and helping others to connect to themselves at their core values and needs. Now that’s what I live for—that moment of connection, when the very energy in the room changes and it is as if time stands still for a moment. To me it is sacred. I am grateful that I am able to help others experience the life within them.”
—Lori Woodley, 2011 graduate

“Mediations are dropping out of the sky onto me”

“I have been asked to do ANOTHER mediation! If I do this one, it will be #4. I’m in awe of these requests for me to mediate. It’s like there’s something miraculous happening … these mediations are dropping out of the sky onto me. John and Ike’s mediation training gave me the tools to navigate my internal world as I vacillate between times of calm and times of storm. This training has given me the link to the deeper understanding of myself and others. I’ve found it to be the doorway to understanding the experience of being human, and the bridge that connects us all to one.”
—Joan Judson, 2010 graduate

“I’ve been mediating for years, but this really added to my skill set”

“I love the amount of time we spent practicing! Ike’s coaching really helped me to interrupt more easily and get people to reflect each other’s feelings and needs. I’ve been mediating for years, but this practice group really added to my skill set.”
—Martha Lasley

“A more responsive attorney”

“I see my participation in your class as having made me a more responsive attorney in relation to my clients. For me (and I’m sure for my clients, as well) this is a really big thing.”
